(Usually, you want to leave this option with the default selections.) Select the network type to apply the rule. (Using the same step, note that you can block the connection.) If you need to specify a port range, you can use a hyphen (-). Quick note: If the app requires multiple ports open, you can type as many as you need as long as you separate each one with a comma (4500,4600,5000). This guide will teach you the steps to open a port to allow an app to communicate outside the network using the built-in firewall on Windows 10. When this happens, you’ll need to manually create a rule to allow them to access the network. Sometimes well-known applications (for example, SQL Server and QuickBooks) will not work as expected because they’re getting blocked by the Microsoft Defender Firewall. You’ll see a prompt to identify and grant or deny permission if it can’t find a rule. Every time an app or service tries to communicate outside your device, it checks if there’s a specific rule in the database to allow or deny network access. On Windows 10, the built-in firewall (also known as the “Microsoft Defender Firewall” or “Windows Firewall”) is a powerful feature that protects your computer and data from threats from outside trying to get in and from those inside trying to get out.Ī firewall works as a gatekeeper and blocks all unnecessary network ports. Continue selecting the protocol, and the port number to open on Windows 10, allow the connection, choose the network profile to apply the rules, and save the changes. Then click on “Inbound Rules” or “Outbound Rules,” click on “New Rule,” and select the “Port” option. To open a Windows firewall port, open the “Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security” console. And on Mac you just go to Connect to server in Finder and type the URL to the NAS and press connect and the credentials dialogue will popup. On Linux you install davfs2 and then use "mount -t davfs -o noexec /mnt/mountfolder" to mount it. Also the simplicity of it speaks in favor for this method. I do have a couple of photographers as customers that are accessing their photo collection on their Synology:s using Webdav and they seem to be very pleased, it performs much better with Webdav than using SMB/CIFS over OpenVPN for example unless you have a very powerful machine/firewall appliance running OpenVPN (for example pfSense/OPNsense with AES-NI acceleration). I suppose it's as easy to configure SFTP as it is to configure Secure Webdav so it all comes down to performance comparison between FTP and webserver file serving which I haven't benchmarked so I can't tell which is faster than the other. However SFTP should give you about the same security as Webdav over HTTPS. Security wise I would vote for Webdav over HTTPS over pure FTP. Your right, it is also possible to mount FTP-shares the same way as Webdav in Windows as you show in your screenshots. I got her sleeping now so I take the opportunity to answer now. Don't get me wrong, I love my daughter I really do, but I've never slept less hours per night than I do now. In FortiGate firewalls these services are all located in a group called "Samba", my mind is not what it used to be before my 2 year old daughter entered the world. Sorry for the name calling □ Your are absolutely correct, SMB/CIFS is the correct naming of the communication protocol. In regards to Webdav, how much more secure is Synology's implementation? ( I take it you understand Norwegian, but it looks almost the same in Swedish) In regards to Windows Explorer, have you ever noticed this way to map a FTP site to your Windows Explorer? Just for you to "get wiser", Samba was never an option untill you brought it up, the correct name would be SMB/CIFS. Hello again, no need for namecalling untill you get more "housewarm".
